Everyone has a different version of what love means to them, which makes "Significant Others", a collection of five one-act plays by Tom W. Kelly, so accessible and, ultimately, so touching. If none of the five one acts mirror the circumstances of one's own life exactly, they are familiar enough in sentiment, if not content, to resonate with anyone who has ever been in love, regardless of your gender or sexual orientation.

"Significant Others", which begins performances at NCTC on Friday, November 5, 2004, and is directed by Alan S. Quismorio, includes five different stories of relationships. Your memories of high school and the prom may be very different from those of the teenage boys portrayed in "The Virgin Tango", one of the intimate short plays included in "Significant Others", but the awkwardness of their love and the bravery that goes along with it is not particular to any one budding romance. The risks that many of us have faced in loving the wrong person, betraying a trust, or facing forgiving or being forgiven ring true in two of the other short plays, "Roadside Assistance" and "Twice Blessed". Rediscovering a lost love can be embarrassing and delightful at the same time, recalling that person who you used to be, for better or for worse, as we see in "Faded Photographs". And who can't identify with those over-coffee moments of confession with the friends who know you better than you know yourself, those friends who don't let you get away with anything, like the ones in "Or Not To Be".

There is no shortage of work revolving around the theme of love. For millennia, authors, poets, playwrights and songwriters have tried to find the answer; the one true message of what love means. To define love in terms of another person, a significant other, is not new either, as there are odes and sonnets from centuries past comparing the object of affection with flowers, a summer's day, and on and on. No one person has ever been definitively right.

Kelly's approach is more successful than those who have tried for years, for once and for all, to articulate for the ages the meaning of love. What we are presented with in this evening of five one-act plays is the meaning of love at various times of life, various stages of hopefulness and cynicism, with different people under more or less complicated sets of circumstances. What we get, rather than the definitive work on love or mere portraits of men in love, is a picture of many of the ways that love can be experienced: with discovery, disdain, and denial; innocently, provocatively, familiarly; righteously, shamelessly and, above all, completely.

We are, each of us, different people depending on who we are with. Identity is a fluctuating set of relationships with other people, especially as we try to define our romantic selves. Each love or lover can bring out the best in us, or the worst, or turns the unshakably solid people we are into unrecognizable individuals, strangers to our friends and families. The process of falling in and out of love is like trying on a different you every time. When you finally become that person you want to be, with the help of your significant other, you may finally reach true love. For a look at the variety of possibilities, or a stroll down memory lane, as the case may be, come see NCTC's collection of "Significant Others" in November.
With the publication of "Where the Wild Things Are" Maurice Sendak's work earned both acclaim and controversy. As he went on to create other popular books and characters, there seemed to be two schools of thought. Some people felt his stories were too dark and disturbing for children. The majority view was that Sendak, through his work, had pioneered a completely new way of writing and illustrating for and about children. Sendak's books took children on journeys into regions of the psyche that children's books had not dared visit before. His narratives were smart, complex, honest and innovative. One of the greatest examples of Sendak's skill is his popular children's musical, "Really Rosie", with original music by Carole King, which kicks off NCTC's Young Audience Matinee Series this season on Saturday, November 13, 2004.

This work was greatly motivated by a new movement in educational media. Inspired by the civil rights and women's movements, educators began looking at how to explore issues of difference and equality in the world. On November 10, 1969 the first broadcast of the children's educational show "Sesame Street" began, partially funded by the federal Head Start program. "Sesame Street", produced by the Children's Television Workshop, used a multi-ethnic and racially diverse cast creating positive and inclusive content for the show. The show never shied away from difficult topics, believing that children are very capable of understanding complex issues when they are presented-in a frank, honest way.
Published in 1972, "Free To Be... You And Me" is a storybook and a songbook, a collection of poems and a gallery of pictures that bring out the child in readers of all ages. This innovative book celebrated diversity, challenged stereotypes, and encouraged kids to be themselves in a joyful, positive manner. Greatly motivated by the feminist movement, the book and following record and television special, sought to break down gender stereotypes often instilled in children at a young age. Gloria Steinem called the book, "a project born of love and hope."

Maurice Sendak's work with celebrated pop singer-songwriter Carole King on "Really Rosie" comes directly out of this groundbreaking era. While Rosie might not be as famous as Sendak's Max and the Wild Things, it's not for lack of effort. King, in the persona of Rosie, struts out as a bold girl, hopeful and confident of her chances of stardom. This fits perfectly with the introduction Sendak includes in the liner notes for the original recording, praising Rosie, and by extension King, as a tough, talented street kid who can do what she wants. "Really Rosie" doesn't sing down to kids. It uses complicated melodies and smart lyrics to bring to life the imaginations of children of all ages.

"Inevitably people assume that if you're writing for children it's an easier task, or you can only use one-quarter of your brain, or that your vocabulary can be simplistic," says Sendak. The popularity of his books and illustrations are proof that this is not what his audience needs or wants. Instead he says he "celebrates the unvanquished child, the child who is putting up a fight, who is holding off as long as he can the inevitable, which is growing up and being forced to conform."

In a society that spends so much time and energy telling all of us who we should be, what we should do, what to want, and what we need to be successful, it's incredibly liberating to have stories, songs, and poems telling us we are just fine the way we are. First performed at NCTC over 10 years ago, past youth performers include acclaimed singer-songwriter and Youth Conservatory alumni, Noe Venable. Our 2004 production, directed by Stephanie Temple, with musical direction by Eric Cole, features a talented cast of young performers that includes both past and present students of NCTC's acclaimed Youth Theatre Conservatory program, currently celebrating its 24th year. Come rediscover Sendak's work when "Really Rosie" opens at NCTC next month.
Have you ever attended a theatre performance and wondered "How did they do that?" Ever wonder what it takes to keep a theatre company running for a quarter of a century? Back in my high school days I wondered just those things and it was my quest to find out all about theatre administration.

Back in those days they didn't have Arts Administration degrees, and the best way to gain knowledge was through work experience. I was quite concerned about pursuing a career in theatre as everyone I knew said that I couldn't make a living in the arts. Despite hearing these repeated warnings I pursued a theatre degree and I've been working in the arts ever since. And now I can't imagine doing anything else.

My career started off as a Production Assistant at a community theatre in my home town of Honolulu. I soon moved from working backstage to working in the business office as a Box Office and Administrative Manager. Working in the office taught me much about the business of running a theatre. My experiences in Honolulu led me to a position here in San Francisco at Intersection for the Arts.

While I managed to keep the books and business office running during the day, my passion for the production side of things never wavered and to quell my thirst for theatre I spent my evenings as a stage manager at several different SF companies. One of those companies was NCTC and I instantly fell in love with the staff and artists of this dynamic institution.

I'm thrilled to now be the Operations Manager here at NCTC. Not only do I get to use my business skills in the areas of human resources and management, but I also get to combine that with Production Management. It's a marriage of two jobs that allows me the backstage pass to know how they managed to build such a huge set in such a small space, and allows me to help support an incredibly hard working staff to continue to produce the best work that they are capable of. It has been a pleasure meeting many of you over the past three months, and for those of you I haven't met, next time you're at NCTC, be sure to pull me aside and introduce yourself. In the meantime, thanks for supporting live theatre in San Francisco. We couldn't do it without you!

Do you attend those oh-so-current "Gay Nights" that are being put on by our brother and sister theatre companies around town? Well here's one for you to pass on to your friends and family: NCTC has just announced it's first ever Straight Club event for "Pageant" this Friday, October 8th. That's right, our straight allies are invited into the theatre to buy a beer and meet a queer on this special night. Yes, now everyone can enjoy all that "Pageant" has to offer. We promise not to sick the Fab Five on you.

Lance was lucky enough to grab a ticket to Macy's Passport Teen Night last month for the "fashion and compassion" event of the year. I learned so much. For instance, green is the new black. Volunteers who gave their time to help NCTC run fun, educational games on HIV prevention for thousand of Bay Area highschoolers were treated to all the slightly malnourished uber-models in their skivvies they could stand. The squeals of volunteers were only slightly overpowered by the adolescent girls in the audience when Mr. Ripped Pecs shed his shirt for all to enjoy. NCTC's YouthAware program is a beneficiary of this oh-so popular event. Now let's all go shopping!

Word on the street is that Prince Gomolvilas, the celebrated playwright who penned NCTC's world premiere production of Mysterious Skin, has joined on to work on the next phase of "OutSpoken". For those who haven't paid attention, "OutSpoken" uses the voices, talents, and perspectives of youth from around the country to address issues of identity, homophobia, safety, and tolerance in an innovative, fluid performance format. Prince (that's the artist-always-known-as) will facilitate post-show workshops with youth from around Northern California following our groundbreaking theatre-in-education play, "The Other Side of the Closet". He'll gather more material, and continue to shape it into a production which will be made available for a variety of uses next year.

I spy with my little eye, super-volunteer Rick Lasquete performing his new cabaret act at the Thick House last month. Even our volunteers are talented at NCTC. In the audience to support him were Board members Steve Kehrli and Cindy Armijo, as well as Volunteer Committee masterminds Nolan Madson and Jim Lowry. Keep your eyes open, kids--we are everywhere!

And if you liked her as Mae West, you'll love her as our new Youth Programs Associate. Ms. Stephanie Temple (recently featured in NCTC productions "Dirty Blonde" and "Breakfast with Scot") has made official her leap to full-time staff member. In this newest role Ms. Temple will be coordinating NCTC's Satellite Drama programs as well as assisting in school outreach for our YouthAware programs.

A few nuggets from this year's Theatre Bay Area annual conference: What do lobsters have to do with theatre? Well, it's kind of a long story. I'll spare you the extended allegory, and bring you to the trivial pursuit moment. Lobsters pee out of their heads. The learning never ends for Lance! I also had the pleasure of mingling with lovely longtime subscriber Allan Mann. You sure know how to charm, Mr. Mann!

And it's true boys and girls, NCTC's Pride Party will take place on November 15th at the classy Savoy Hotel, hosted by the incomparable diva herself, Miss Coco Peru, star of the recent hit indie Girls Will Be Girls and the cult-classic, Trick. Haven't yet introduced yourself to the dreamy subscriber who sits three seats down? Now's your chance.

Until we meet again. Blackout!
