<P><FONT face=arial,helvetica,sans-serif color=#ffffff size=2>At long last, Miss Coco Peru, that sassy, sophisticated drag artist, star of stage and screen, is finally making her San Francisco debut with <STRONG><EM>Miss Coco Peru is Undaunted</EM></STRONG>, and she only has one question for us, "What the hell took you so long to ask me?"</FONT></P>
<P><FONT face=arial,helvetica,sans-serif color=#ffffff size=2>Winner of the 2004 GLAAD Award for Best Los Angeles Theatre, and nominated for an Ovation Award for Best Solo Performance, <EM>Undaunted</EM> was a highlight of last year's Southern California theatre scene.</FONT></P>
<P><FONT face=arial,helvetica,sans-serif color=#ffffff size=2>Those of you lucky enough to see Miss Peru's dazzling performance at our Subscriber Appreciation Party in December know full well what you're in for. The rest of you may know Miss Peru, who's real name is Clinton Leupp, from appearances on both the big and small screen including, <EM>Girls Will Be Girls</EM>, <EM>Trick</EM>, <EM>To Wong Foo</EM>, <EM>Will and Grace</EM>, and <EM>Boy Meets Boy</EM>.</FONT></P>
<P><FONT face=arial,helvetica,sans-serif color=#ffffff size=2>Don't be misled. <EM>Undaunted</EM> is not just a campy, lip-sync, drag show. This is real theatre -- a deeply personal tale of an incredibly unique life, which details, said the <EM>L.A. Times</EM>, how Miss Peru has "straddled the divide between saint and sinner, ladylike sweetness and stevedore crassness." She is, said the <EM>Times</EM>, a "heavenly hoot, a svelte diva with a belt voice and a Bronx accent...a hybrid of Paul Lynde and Lola Falana."</FONT></P>
<P><FONT face=arial,helvetica,sans-serif color=#ffffff size=2>Leupp has a slightly less complicated description of his show. "I write shows to work out my issues...and then I charge you to see it. Drag offers me the opportunity to create myself rather than having to accept the roles that were handed to me and which left me a bit empty. I tell stories of my life that are both funny and poignant...completely relatable to all people, regardless of what I choose to wear."</FONT></P>
<P><FONT face=arial,helvetica,sans-serif color=#ffffff size=2>Be that as it may, Leupp and his performances continue to garner outstanding accolades. The <EM>L.A. Weekly</EM> called Miss Peru a "frothy tour-de-force who mingles sassy New York-style camp with sappy old-fashioned <EM>schmaltz</EM>." <EM>Drama-Logue</EM> called her "truthful, funny dignified and at all times very human...Coco Peru is somebody you know - if you're very, very lucky."</FONT></P>

<P><FONT face=arial,helvetica,sans-serif color=#ffffff size=2><EM><STRONG>Party Daze</STRONG></EM>, by Canadian playwright Ed Roy, is back for its second year as part of NCTC's YouthAware Educational Theatre Programming. A compelling, multi-media drama, this one-man show has been applauded for its honest exploration of the causes of sexual assult in adolescent and teenage relationships.</FONT></P>
<P><FONT face=arial,helvetica,sans-serif color=#ffffff size=2>The story, told through flashbacks, centers on Rod, a sixteen year-old boy trying to grow up in a modern society with conflicting expectations. Like most teenagers, he has problems relating to both his parents and peers, and longs just to be accepted as normal. After a night of illegal drinking, Rod ends up raping a female classmate - a girl he actually liked. The next day, he locks the door to his bedroom and relives the nightmare of his crime and his confusion.</FONT></P>
<P><FONT face=arial,helvetica,sans-serif color=#ffffff size=2>Veteran NCTC actor, John Atwood has once again been cast in the role of Rod. Atwood was last seen here in the Pride Season production of <EM>Significant Others</EM>, as well as <EM>And Then They Came for Me</EM> and <EM>The Other Side of the Closet</EM> (also written by Ed Roy), both part of the YouthAware Educational Theatre Program.</FONT></P>
<P><FONT face=arial,helvetica,sans-serif color=#ffffff size=2>Ed Roy, artistic director of the Topological Theatre Company since 1991, has won numerous writing awards and has served on the staff of many Canadian theatre companies such as the National Theatre School and Theatre Direct Canada.</FONT></P>

<P><FONT face=arial,helvetica,sans-serif color=#ffffff size=2>Love will be in the air and wine on the lips during a very special Valentine's weekend wine tasting event following a matinee performance of <EM>Mambo Italiano</EM>. On Sunday, February 13, the audience and cast will be invited to sample wine from several Bay Area vintners as they vie to win a place in our hearts. You can also mingle with the cast and talk about the show. It's the perfect day for wine tasting because after all, Saint Valentine was Italian...</FONT></P>
<P><FONT face=arial,helvetica,sans-serif color=#ffffff size=2>On a more serious note, our theatre will host a facilitated panel discussion after the Sunday, March 6th performance of <EM>Rescue and Recovery</EM>. The play, a quirky, dark comedy, centers on a recovering addict and takes an honest look at what it means to be in love and what it takes to get over both love <EM>and</EM> addiction. The panel discussion will tackle how the play deals with addiction -- an all too common disease that not only affects the addict, but also those who love them. Members participating on the panel will be from the local recovery community.</FONT></P>

<P><FONT face=arial,helvetica,sans-serif color=#ffffff size=2>It has been close to 20 years that I've been sharing space with the New Conservatory Theatre Center and enjoying this great association. The atmosphere within our space is quite lively. There is always something going on, either a show going up, actors rehearsing in hallways, scenery being built or students participating in one of the many educational shows, just to name a few. And gratefully, one of my responsibilities is to document it all.</FONT></P>
<P><FONT face=arial,helvetica,sans-serif color=#ffffff size=2>I started my photography studio in 1980 in downtown San Francisco near Union Square. After studying with such greats as Ansel Adams and Cole Weston and obtaining a BFA from SUNY Buffalo, I opened my own studio at a relatively early age. I was determined and all consumed by photography. I spent days in the darkroom. I roamed the countryside photographing at the crack of dawn and with the sun setting. For many years I was invited to exhibit many of my fine art photographs.</FONT></P>
<P><FONT face=arial,helvetica,sans-serif color=#ffffff size=2>Because I love to work with people, I eventually chose to photograph people in any and all walks of life. I specialize in the one-on-one promotional headshot whether for commercial, theatrical or corporate purposes. I love to work with adults as well as kids. I work in the studio and also love the natural light. I shoot all formats. We are also expanding our studio as we enter the digital age and Photoshop and we now have a film and <EM>digital darkroom</EM>.</FONT></P>
<P><FONT face=arial,helvetica,sans-serif color=#ffffff size=2>I love working with actors for many reasons. Actors tend to be more open and more honest about themselves. They are willing to reveal themselves in ways many others are hesitant. They are free to move and express themselves. All these subtleties add to the truthful depiction of the subject. It is part of what makes the image outstanding -- when one is very present and alive and open in their photograph. It is an intimate, memorable and very exciting process. People have approached me 10 years later quoting verbatim our discussions during our photo shoots. It is a unique experience.</FONT></P>
<P><FONT face=arial,helvetica,sans-serif color=#ffffff size=2>I also am fortunate to have a relatively large client base. I photograph many types of professionals such as lawyers, accountants, realtors, brokers, authors, etc. One of my most active clients is KGO TV where I have had the opportunity to photograph their anchors and reporters not only for their current website but also for their billboard campaigns. I have also photographed KGO Radio, KRON, Telemundo, KFOG, and KNBR to name a few. I tend to specialize in photographing media personalities.</FONT></P>
<P><FONT face=arial,helvetica,sans-serif color=#ffffff size=2>The theater space here at NCTC is a great <EM>home</EM> for me. I am excited to provide the publicity shots for almost all the productions here. It is challenging to create unique and different images for each show. The space is excellent for photo sessions and the building is a beautiful specimen of historic architecture built almost 100 years ago. And most of all, I appreciate the enthusiastic and caring staff here. Ed Decker has provided a truly significant and creative space for all of us to perform, transform and inform. He has given a huge gift to us all.</FONT></P>

Those of you who might have seen television crews lurking around the building, or following Artistic Director, <STRONG>Ed Decker</STRONG> around the country may have wondered. No, they weren't taping a new episode of <EM>Fear Factor -NCTC</EM>. Actually the crew was from the KQED television show, <EM><STRONG>SPARK</STRONG></EM> who will air a feature story about Ed Decker and our humble theatre on March 23 at 7:30 pm (and again on the 25th at 11 pm). We should all watch more PBS anyways, right?</FONT></P>
<P><FONT face=arial,helvetica,sans-serif color=#ffffff size=2>Mormons seem all the rage these days, don't they? They're everywhere! Well, it seems <STRONG>Stephen Fales</STRONG> will return to NCTC this spring for a limited ten-performance engagement of his hit show, <STRONG><EM>Confessions of a Mormon Boy</EM></STRONG>. The show has been garnering rave reviews during its recent national tour. His brief run here will be a warm-up for his Off-Broadway premiere, opening later in the year. So folks, you can all say you saw it here first (again)!</FONT></P>
<P><FONT face=arial,helvetica,sans-serif color=#ffffff size=2>From the Oh-My-God-We'll-Miss-You Department, our own technical director, <STRONG>Cat Stevens</STRONG> is moving on this month. As you may know, Cat has been the captain of the technical department for the past two seasons at NCTC. She's not going too far though, and you may just catch sight of her at the<STRONG> LGBT Community Center</STRONG> where she'll be the new Facilities Manager. Enjoy those windows, Cat! <STRONG>John Kell</STRONG>y (currently our Master Electrician) will be filling her shoes as our new Technical Director.</FONT></P>
<P><FONT face=arial,helvetica,sans-serif color=#ffffff size=2>And from the close call files... NCTC will be hosting a fabulous fundraising fête, <EM><STRONG>You Gotta Have Heart</STRONG></EM>, on Monday, February 28, to raise money for <STRONG>Richard "Scrumbly" Koldewyn</STRONG> who suffered a heart attack a few weeks back. Don't worry folks - NCTC's resident musical theatre instructor and original member of the <STRONG>Cockettes</STRONG> is doing just fine now. However, there are all those ridiculous healthcare bills. Continue to rail against the health care system, but while you're at it, come see a fabulous show and support our old friend. Watch the NCTC website for more details.</FONT></P>

Just a hop, skip and jump from our front door, this new Market Street joint has been featuring quite a few members of our talented NCTC family lately. <STRONG>Meg Mackay</STRONG>, <STRONG>Billy Philadelphia</STRONG> and <STRONG>Spencer Day</STRONG> (among others) have been packing them in.
