Facts=20 Contradict Claims of Osama bin Laden
(Fact sheet = released=20 by U.S. Department of State)

U.S. Department of State

Fact Sheet

November 3, 2001

Osama bin Laden has made many claims and = charges.=20 His most recent statement asserts that the Coalition is = waging a=20 campaign against Muslims, Afghans and Islam. You can draw = your own=20 conclusions: the facts contradict bin Laden's claim. =

Terrorist Attacks: The Muslim Toll =

The United States lost thousands of = innocent=20 citizens, including women and children, in attacks in Kenya, = Tanzania, Yemen, and the United States. Hundreds of Muslims = died in=20 those attacks, including citizens from Islamic nations of=20 Bangladesh, Egypt, Indonesia, Jordan, Lebanon, Indonesia, = Malaysia,=20 Pakistan, and Turkey.

Ask yourselves this question: What did bin = Laden do=20 to defend the Muslims who died in those attacks? Nothing. He = murdered them.

Afghan People

The United States leads the international = community=20 in providing relief aid to the Afghan people. More than 80 = percent=20 of food shipments through the UN's food program originate in = the=20 United States, and President Bush has announced $320 million = in aid=20 for the Afghan people.

-- The United States also has dropped more = than a=20 million ration packages to the Afghan people.

-- This is not new: the United States = spent hundreds=20 of millions of dollars to aid Afghanistan before this = campaign, and=20 we are resolved to remain Afghanistan's largest aid donor.=20

Ask yourselves: What has bin Laden done = for the=20 Afghan people? How much food, medicine, and other assistance = has he=20 delivered?

Afghanistan

The United States supports UN efforts to = find a=20 broad-based political settlement in Afghanistan that is led = by=20 Afghans and respects the rights of Afghan people. These = leaders=20 represent all major Afghan groups.

Ask yourselves: What efforts at peace has = bin Laden=20 made? None. How many Afghan leaders has he killed? He has = condemned=20 the UN and brought in thousands of foreigners to Afghanistan = who=20 have done nothing but bring fighting, destruction, and = suffering to=20 the country.

Fight for Muslim Peoples Worldwide =

The United States has defended Muslims = around the=20 world. We fought for and beside Muslims in Kuwait, Bosnia, = Kosovo=20 and helped the Afghans in their war against the Soviet = occupation.=20 We have supported the independence of Muslim countries from=20 colonialism. America also spent thousands of millions of = dollars to=20 help Afghans liberate their country from the Soviet = occupation.=20

Ask yourselves: What did bin Laden do for = those=20 oppressed Muslims? Nothing.

The United States and Islam

Bin Laden charges that our campaign = against terror=20 is a war against Islam and Muslims. The United States is a=20 multi-religious country with several million Muslim = citizens.=20 Countries around the world support U.S. efforts, including = the=20 largest Islamic political group in the world, the = Organization of=20 the Islamic Conference (OIC).

-- The OIC issued a statement condemning = the murders=20 carried about by bin Laden.

-- In addition to this statement by = Islamic nations,=20 the entire world condemned these attacks in a unanimous UN=20 resolution (Resolution 1368) and called on all countries to = bring=20 the perpetrators to justice.

Ask yourselves: How many of these same = countries=20 support what bin Laden has done? None.

Conclusion

You will see propaganda from bin Laden = many times,=20 claming that he defends Muslims and represents the Islamic = world. In=20 the face of empty propaganda, the facts should never be = forgotten:=20

-- The United States has defended Muslims. = Bin Laden=20 has murdered them.

-- The United States feeds Afghans. Bin = Laden wages=20 war that starves them.

-- The United States supports plans to = help Afghans=20 lead a peaceful Afghanistan. Bin Laden supports plans to = help=20 foreigners inside Afghanistan destroy the country. =

-- The United States has won support for = this=20 campaign from Islamic nations around the world, representing = many=20 millions of Muslims. These same countries condemn bin Laden. =

Islam is a religion of peace and charity. = Bin Laden=20 has distorted this tradition by murdering innocents in the = name of=20 religion. He has designed these acts to raise his profile = from a=20 marginal terrorist to a defender of Muslims. His failure is=20 inevitable, not only because of the evil he had perpetrated. =

-- He also will fail because we will bring = him to=20 justice.

I was let off with a warning (he didn't even flinch at my Texas Oct '00 tags) & we got chatting though and he said don't bother, go further south which I did, belted, ahem, proceeded at a steady pace down Hwy1 -- amazing view. The sky was a big difference even just from Monterey -- stars were like sand paper granules rather than a few hundred of the brighter specks. I'd say the comets were coming in around one or just less than one a second for about the half hour I was watching until my body temperature threatened my continued existence. The occasional meteor making a huge streak across the skyline that took a few seconds to fade; you could hear people yelping all over the city. Great show!
