------=_NextPart_000_01CA_01C1AE47.3EE412D0-- From jonathan@numbernine.net Wed Feb 6 00:28:15 2002 From: jonathan@numbernine.net (Jonathan Jaffe) Date: Tue, 05 Feb 2002 16:28:15 -0800 Subject: [Squishy] Salon 9 - Great Ideas in Philosophy - A Series Message-ID: <9f14b3c5.b3c59f14@numbernine.net> Beginning next Thursday, the 14th of February at 7pm, we will begin a new salon. It will be a series on philosophy called," The Great Ideas of Philosophy," essentially an introduction to the subject by way of general survey. We have recently purchased the CD series recorded by the distinguished and entertaining Professor Daniel Robinson of Georgtown University. He's an excellent speaker exited about his field to the point of stuttering when he gets into topics that _really_ interest him. The course is a general survey in philosophy (see the description below) and is broken up into 50 half-hour lectures. If you are like us and missed the opportunity to study philosophy while in college, you may find this opportunity fun. The format will be to listen to two half-hour lectures each week over a pot-luck dinner, then have an open discussion afterwards. We expect the average size of the group to range between 4 and ten each week, as people's schedules allow. It is not necessary to committ to coming each week, and we may arrange for the CDs to be available for those who might like to listen to them outside of the salon. There is also a syllibis we will make available. Please email us your tentative interests and any thoughts you have for making this more interesting to you, as well as to get directions to our house. We hope you decide to join us. Feel free to pass this email on to an interested friend. Alexei Kojevnikov Department of History, University of Georgia The Great War, the Russian Civil War, and the Invention of Big Science The revolutionary transformation in Russian science towards the Soviet model of research started even before the revolution of 1917. It was triggered by the crisis of World War I, in response to which Russian academics proposed radical changes in the goals and infrastructure of the country's scientific effort. Their drafts envisioned the recognition of science as a profession separate from teaching, the creation of research institutes, and the turn towards practical, applied research subordinated to the military and industrial needs of the nation. The political revolution and especially the Bolshevik government that shared or appropriated many of the same views on science, helped materialize this reform during the subsequent Civil War. By 1921, the foundation of a novel system of research and development became established, which in its most essential characteristics was similar to the later U.S. phenomenon known as "big science." 5:00-6:30 PM Monday, February 11, 2002 203 Wheeler Hall Office for History of Science and Technology, 543 Stephens Hall #2350 University of California at Berkeley, Berkeley, CA 94720-2350 tel: (510) 642-5321, e-mail: Office@ohst7.berkeley.edu From noddy@orangedesign.com Sat Feb 9 01:27:34 2002 From: noddy@orangedesign.com (mark del lima) Date: Fri, 08 Feb 2002 17:27:34 -0800 Subject: [Squishy] a very squishy dim sum In-Reply-To: <15460.20534.473711.353182@slug.code.net> Message-ID: i've been to yank sing. it is really good. it also costs a little more than usual. however, what you get for your money is peace of mind that your adorable, little deep-fried savories lack fur, beak, and claw. m* > From: Will Luo > Reply-To: Will Luo > Date: Fri, 08 Feb 2002 14:24:54 -0800 > To: kathryn aaker > Cc: squishy@goop.org > Subject: [Squishy] a very squishy dim sum > > > also just for future refrence, two other dim sum places come to mind. one > is yank sing, which actually has two locations, both in the down town > area. it's always packed on the weekend. another one is ton kiang, on geary > 23rd ish. every one always rave about it but i haven't been there yet. it's > supposed to be a pretty big place. actually there's another one that i just > thought of, canton house, on folsom and 5th-ish. also a big place and the > food's supposed to be good. mmmm, dim sum. > > will > _______________________________________________ > it's all about the squishy > Squishy@goop.org > http://www.goop.org/mailman/listinfo/squishy > From kathryn@kathrynaaker.com Mon Feb 11 18:37:13 2002 From: kathryn@kathrynaaker.com (kathryn aaker) Date: Mon, 11 Feb 2002 10:37:13 -0800 Subject: [Squishy] Fw: All Your News in Seventeen Syllables Message-ID: <00bf01c1b32b$200dde70$9900a8c0@lomolust> This is a multi-part message in MIME format. ------=_NextPart_000_00BC_01C1B2E8.111ACB50 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable as mentioned at the picnic: www.headlinehaikus.com ----- Original Message -----=20 From: Headline Haikus=20 To: haiku@kathrynaaker.com=20 Sent: Monday, February 11, 2002 10:17 AM Subject: All Your News in Seventeen Syllables Rate today's haikus!
