Ok. just wanted to say that I was reading my emails
(which I wrote after quite a bit of wine in Amalfi)
and they are so shitty so I apologize..but whatever,
its honest so hope yall didnt mind. anyways, I will do
a MUCH shorter briefing of what I be doin. and I want
to apologize if I havent had time to respond to you
each individually. I hope that all of you are well! I
cant wait to see you when I return.
June 6th-Trevi fountain
Somedays, things just happen for you. Subway doors
stop right at your feet, no lines, you just walk right
in. Everybody smiles. Somebody whistles, and you
almost cause and accident or two.
-Well today isnt that day, but it is still pretty
fuckin nice. Here by the fountain, a beautiful dark
skinned Italian girl poses on the side of the pool of
clear water (which I have learned you can drink, for
this was how the city originally provided water for
its citizens). She purses her lips and vamps, rolling
her eyes up into her head, then breaks down and laughs
uncontrollably, her friend who takes her photo laughs
as well. I think about Anita Ekburgs midnight swim in
LA DOLCE VITA and I wish I could go in the pool..but
there are too many Carabinieri around. Tourists throw
coins into the fountain, hoping that, as the legend
goes, they will return to Rome.
-Wandered around some more, made some more friends
near the Spanish steps where an Italian show choir
sang exerpts from Phantom of the Opera and Oklahoma.
Their acents are funny. But They are really trying
hard.
Over the next couple of days I began to feel more at
home. Went to a rave outside the city where I met
Allesandro, a young artist with whom, I have become
wonderful friends. I crashed with Allesandro from
here on out in Rome, as he has a big and beautiful
place and bit adieu to Francesco, who was kind hearted
through and through, but realized he had begun bumming
my shit out. Really. The night me and Allesandro met,
we sat late at night and drank at the Trevi Fountain.
A roman rat scurried by. The fountain is no less
marvelous for this and we both think the rat very
lucky. I hung out with John Michaels (a friend of
Harry Dewildt)who was wonderful and took me on a crazy
ride on the back of a scooter all over the city and
then we had lunch with his amazing friend (an
archeologist and jewel collector) who lived in
Mussolinis old palace. A few days later, I would head
to the island of Capri, where I would have one of the
best days of my life. On the boat to the island of
capri, I met a beautiful girl from the island. She had
never been to Rome, and was on her way back from
Naples, where she had never been before. she was
visiting her sister. She liked capri she said. She
never felt the need to go anywhere else. I understand
this, some of us are roamers. From the bay I see mount
Vesuvius tower ominously over the bay of Napoli and
within the hour, see the island of Capri jutting out
of the water like "Bali Hi" or some shit...I mean, so
beautiful you cant believe its real. I told the girl
from Capri (whose name I never knew) that I couldnt
believe this wasnt a dream. She look at me intently,
studying my face and says, "this is real."She smiles
and places her hands upon her chest, breathlessly and
looks at the rays of sunlight piercing through the
stormy clouds. She must have seen this a million
times, but she looks as though she has never seen a
sunset before. I will always remember this trip to her
island. The trip only got better and better and by the
next evening, I would be drunk on wine, riding on the
back of a scooter over the cliffs of the island with a
beautiful stranger. It was magical. I still cant
believe that this was my life I was living there,
surely it had to be somebody else. A few days later,
it was back to Barcelona where I met up with Kathryn
the great and her kick ass English and Australian
buddies. Attended the SONAR music festival (I saw the
Pet Shop Boys) who arent my favorites but Brian, for
you I screamed like a queen on fire! I went to La
Terazza (a disco which is in a castle overlooking the
city) and rolled on the Ramblas. Met someone I knew in
LA on the beach in Barcelona and then, me and my
friend Josh returned to Rome for another mad week of
mischief. Anyways, I suppose I havent really written
much about my experiences because I have been too busy
having them....but I am so looking forward to locking
myself in a room, alone with my piano and pounding out
some new kick ass shit that I can share with all of
you. I hope this letter finds you all well and I want
to remind you to all go the the CRIMSON CLUB tonight
to see the Kittens in action (I am there in spirit
guys). I cant wait to see you all!
all my love,
Spencer
