The next town down the road, Malanda, was having its annual show so we paid our small entry fees and immersed ourselves in country Australia.

There were side shows, rides, food stalls and show bag stands. There were dairy cattle and beef cattle, ponies and show jumpers.

While we were watching the ponies, Rachel rang from San Francisco and I had the odd feeling that she was watching the horses with us.

We visited The Crater Lake at Mt Hypipamee National Park. This deep hole in the ground is the result of a volcanic blowout which has left a 60 metre deep, sheer sided hole in the solid rock which is connected underground to the local water table and it has fish living in it.

We ended the day at a very basic little caravan park in an old tin mining town called Herberton. Despite being entirely beyond its use-by date, the town is working hard to survive by re-inventing itself as a fashionable place to dine or have afternoon tea. The town is neat and the buildings are all newly painted and, even on Sunday, you can get a beer or a cup of coffee or do the laundry.
