The mail not having appeared by the following Monday, we decided to call it a day and head south.

Ayr is the first big town south of Townsville and boasts a council caravan park with a dump station so we stopped here.

I was able to christen the brand new dump station which had just been installed as a result of lobbying by the CMCA.

The manager and I had an interesting discussion about free camping. He railed against the council for letting all and sundry camp on the showground on the back of CMCA members returning south from the rally in Townsville but he allowed that self-contained vehicles like the Motley should be permitted to stop anywhere that doesn't cause a hazard to others.

He also told me his income stream. $5K per week in the high season down to $1K per week in the low season. That probably results in a gross income of about $100K which is little enough to pay the lease, garbage collection, electricity and water charges and wages. He says he has renewed his lease but he's giving it up in two years so he must be getting something out of it.
