We went for a walk before breakfast and set off towards Northam reasonably early. We had a choice of routes and I elected to go via the Midland Highway rather than the coast road.

This is the heart of the wheat growing area and the countryside is gently rolling hills covered with fields of wheat. The salinity problem of Western Australia is starkly evident here with salt pans in every depression and what were once cleared paddocks in the depressions reverting to scrub.

There are now fairly large trees in the landscape and the wild flowers are generally taller with trees two or three metres (6 to 10 ft) high covered with purple or yellow blossoms creating beautiful banks of colour on either side of the road.

We made good progress and reached Moora in time for afternoon tea. We stayed in the caravan park so that we could plug in to power and keep warm overnight.
