With nothing more to keep us in Esperance, we set off to the north. It was extremely hot, 39°C (100°F), and very windy. As we were going uphill and into a strong headwind we made slow progress and called it a day at Salmon Gums, half was to Norseman. The town has set up a community caravan park which is unstaffed and operates on the honour system. It used to cost $7 a night but even here, right out in the sticks, the "free market" has taken hold and it now costs $12 a night. Since all one gets is a space in a sandy parking lot beside the railway line with electricity, water and access to a dirty, smelly ablutions block it all seems a bit out of proportion to us. Hey, but we were able to run the airconditioner all afternoon while we watched the cricket on TV so we were happy.
