Gippslanders Chapter Birthday Meeting

Friday 18th

We set off to the west, stopping at a caravan park in Traralgon which had a dump station accessible to non-guests. No dump point was accessible as they were all on caravan sites. I made a note to tell Philip to delete it from the dump point list in "The Book".

We stopped in Moe to pick up the mail. We found a cafe and had lunch while we read the reports on the house. The news wasn't all good. The pest inspector had found evidence on past termite activity and the building inspector hadn't been able to check under the floor as there was no access. He recommended that we seek the vendor's approval to put a trapdoor in the floor so that the foundations and the underfloor timbers can be inspected. We will talk to the solicitor on Monday to see if this can be arranged.

We reached the site of the chapter meeting just in time to set up before happy hour. We found a fairly level site which allowed us to face east, the preferred orientation as it keeps the fridge in the shade. The site is right on the water's edge and we have a superb view out over the lake.

We were amazed at how many of the people attending this gathering we had met before. We had expected to be almost total strangers but it wasn't so.

Saturday 19th

In the morning, we went into town to buy the weekend paper and some things I had forgotten.

In the evening we all went to the RSL for a Chapter Birthday dinner. The meal was a bit disappointing as it took ages for everyone to serve themselves and we got the tail end of the food. However, the company was good, the wine was drinkable and the entertainment was amusing so the evening wasn't a total disaster.

Sunday 20th

We had been told that we should visit Mount Worth while we are in the area and as it was not far away and as the sun was shining we decided to go today. The view from the scenic lookout is panoramic but the day was hazy so we didn't get to see it at its best.

The road up the mountain was quite steep and winding and going right round the mountain would have required a lot more of the same so I drove back a couple of kilometres to a road we had passed on the way up and came down to the plain into a town called Yarragon.

This is a local tourist place with a Sunday market and lots of second hand goods shops and the like. We chose a cafe at random and ordered devonshire tea. The scones were delicious, fresh and as good as homemade which is so unusual these days that we considered it had been a pretty worthwhile outing.

As we chatted with friends in the afternoon, I was reminded that this place has a colony of bell miners which had lifted our spirits with their beautiful calls all weekend.
