Hi all -

Yuri's Night in San Francisco is starting to come
together! I'd like to thank Sam for intro, and take
this chance to let everyone know what we have planned.
 We've got a venue, a band line-up, a lot of visual
media on-hand, and a bunch of folks committed to
making this event as memorable as possible. We are
going to need some help in the coming months with
various aspects, but I wanted to send out an
announcement e-mail so that everybody's can get an
idea of what we've got planned.

We are going to hold the event at a large warehouse
space called the Blue Maguey, located at 590 Minnesota
St (at 18th St). This building is owned and operated
by the head of Rodent Records, Elton Ridge, a fellow
musician and space enthusiast, and I don't think we
could ask for a better host. Being the owner of the
space, Elton is handling a lot of the logistics of
set-up, including designing the stage, securing our
Internet connection, dealing w/the sound system and
power supplies, etc. I'm dealing more with the
community outreach/PR stuff, the entertainment
schedule, and the pro-space groups and their
materials. Here's what we have arranged so far.

- Venue: as I said, this is a warehouse space, we're
planning on being able to accomodate a few hundred
people. A stage is being designed by Elton and will
need to be assembled, built, and painted the week of
April 6th, just prior to the show. We are planning on
working every evening that week up until the show to
get this done, and any extra man-(or woman!)power that
we can get to get this done would be much appreciated.
Contact me if you're interested in doing some
hammering and painting and I can give you further
details. We will have beer available for those over
21. The space will be arranged with the semi-circular
stage in one corner, tables for the pro-space info,
the "bar", and the bands' merchandise will be set-up
along the far wall, and projectors and lights will be
spaced appropriately throughout the rest of the venue.

- Entertainment: The evening will be emceed by Andy
Peters, and will feature 3 bands (my band the Shimmer
Kids Underpop Association, the Chantigs, and the Cubby
Creatures). The band sets will be broken up with
other activities, including two short 16mm film
screenings (the longest being a 14-minute 1972 NASA
doc on the Apollo 16 mission), a costume contest (win
a lifetime's supply of Tang! Or at least several
months' worth...), a short speech/presentation from
astrophysicist Jerry Whalen from Livermore, and of
course some of Andy's own irrepressible schtick. In
addition to this, we will have several TVs with VCRs,
several 16mm and 8mm projectors, and a bunch of slide
projectors on-hand to provide all sorts of visuals.
We already have an extensive library of space-related
footage at our disposal.

- Time: Doors will open at 8pm. As it is now, we have
things scheduled to end at midnight, but things will
likely run over if everyone's having a good time.

- Admission: Elton and I agreed we'd like to keep this
event free and open to the public. *However* we are
planning to encourage (and enable) attendees to donate
money to Yuri's Night-related space
charities/organizations (as well as purchase band
merchandise, naturally).

- Webcasting: Please contact Dave Dunstan
(dave@underpop.org) for info on our Web-presence.
Dave is coordinating our set-up with Elton and with
Yuri's Night Digital Team guru Ed "Zig" Chester.

- Pro-space materials/organizations: This is where we
currently need the most work. I have contacted a few
organizations (X-Prize, Space Adventures, the
Planetary Society) and have received a few
handouts/publications we can have on-hand. I have
contacted the Mars Society about attending and
providing some info on their activities. I would like
to have a lot more organizations involved, if anyone
is at all interested in having a table, or even just
attending, please let me know and we will work with
you.

PR/Promotions: I have contacted the East Bay Express,
the SF Weekly and the Bay Guardian about including us
in their event listings. With any luck, we may
actually get a write-up from one of them. I will also
be posting announcements to the Squidlist and
Bourgeouis magazine, and of course through the Yuri's
Night site. If anyone has any further media contacts
we can exploit to get the word out about this event,
please let me know.

I think that's about it for now. Please contact me
with any thoughts/questions/outspoken opinions, etc.

Thanks!
Josh
