Our deepest excursion into the bush was up 35 km (20 miles) of gravel road to a place called Arltunga. We found that 20 kph (12mph) was about the fastest comfortable speed so it took some time to reach our destination, Arltunga.

There is a preserved historic sites here with the remains of what was once a gold mining adventure. An Interpretive Centre provides the knowledge needed to understand what one sees.

This place was 600 km (400 moles) from the nearest outpost of civilization when the miners came here on foot bringing all their gear with them to find riches.

The buildings which remain were built by the government to house the house the Manager, the Assayist and the gold store were built to last of local stone and enable one to see something of what life was like here 120 years ago.

We stayed overnight in the pub camp ground.
