Highway Wanderers Chapter Meeting

Thursday 10th

photo of the view fron Isla Gorge National ParkLeaving Wandoan, we visited the Isla Gorge National Park camping Area for morning tea. It is quite beautiful, right on the edge of the gorge with panoramic views of the surrounding countryside.

We drove to Theodore, found the park where it had been arranged we spend the weekend, found George and Jan already there, had lunch and waited for Philip and Helene to arrive.

We happy houred till about half past seven and repaired to the Motley for the night.

Friday 11th

photo of the Post Office which sells fruit anf vegetables In the morning we walked into town to sightsee and to shop. The Post Office is remarkable because it is sells fruit and veges as well as stamps and stationery.

We met a couple having a cup of coffee who were in town to do a tender for a new bridge. They live at Samford and we chatted for quite some time before they had to leave to go back to Brisbane.

During the afternoon several other motorhomes turned up including Don and Maureen Kennedy , our oldest motorhoming friends. We are now eight vehicles.

Saturday 12th

photo of jean and Helene at the cotton farm In the morning, we all went to visit a cotton farm. Jeannie Conachan, the lady of the place gave us an extensive tour of the property and told us all sorts of interesting things about cotton farming. After the tour she invited all 15 of us for morning tea. I chatted to the her husband, Erroll, and discovered that the only reason they were farming cotton was that the return from cattle farming had fallen below a level able to sustain the family and, as they have a significant water allocation, they were able to turn over a quarter of the farm to cotton and boost their income by something of the order of $200,000 pa. I came away with a somewhat different view of cotton farmers from my previous outright condemnation of them all.

In the afternoon we played boule and had a happy happy hour.

In the evening most of us went to the local community owned pub for a meal accompanied by much mirth and laughter.

Sunday 13th

Helene had organised a day full of fun for us.

In the morning we had a Mother's Day morning tea complete with flowers for all the mothers.

At lunchtime we had a barbecue complete with billy tea.

In the afternoon we had a visit from the local bobbie and we spent a couple of hours in conversation with him.

We all revealed our answers to the Theodore Trivia Trek, most serious and some not so. Everyone got a prize

We played a new game Helene had devised which requires one member of the team to guess a word given clues provided as a sentence with each alternate word from one of the two clue-givers. It sound simple but it was highly entertaining.

In the evening we ate the food left over from lunch.

Monday 14th

We decided to stay on another day, visited the old hardware shop where the stock goes back until the year Cockie died, had lunch at the coin laundry, and had happy hour with the few remaining motorhomers.
