Wide Bay Wanderers Chapter Meeting

Friday 8th

We left Carters Ridge at noon heading north to go to the Wide Bay Wanderers chapter meeting at Burrum Heads.

We stopped for lunch outside Maryborough and arrived at Burrum Heads at about 3.30. As we set up, the rain came down in buckets and saturate everything including me. They had had a big storm earlier in the afternoon and there was lots of debris in the park and a couple of people had lost their awnings. We were lucky to miss the worst of it.

In the evening a dozen of us, including our old friends from Mount Isa Allan and Willa Ross, went to the pub for dinner. Friday night is their raffle night so we bought lots of tickets and won a few prizes. The company was good as was the food. Since we were travelling by courtesy bus, we were able to drink without thinking about the RBT so a good night was enjoyed by all.

Saturday 9th

Up just after dawn to walk the length of the waterfront promenade. The caravan park is on the river just a few metres from the sea so the scenery is quite delightful. Most of the property on the waterfront is holiday rental accommodation and I suppose if you are keen on fishing this would be a good place to spend your vacation.

The chapter had a general meeting in the afternoon at which many issues were discussed and actions resolved. This was a good demonstration of democracy at work. Clearly, all the members present want to participate in the detailed workings of their chapter.

In the evening, we went to the Bowling Club for dinner. Though it was a bit cheaper than the pub, I thought that the food wasn't as good. The lack of airconditioning also left a somewhat less than good impression. We caught the courtesy bus back to the caravan park and repaired to the Motley.

Given the friendly reception we have received at this gathering, it's hard to comprehend that anyone would think that the Wide Bay Wanderers were not welcoming of visitors. We will certainly take up their invitation to visit them whenever we are able.
