Needing to eat up a good many miles, we set off to Deniliquin and Hay.

The road from Barham to Deniliquin is very flat with few memorable features. We saw lots of rice fields and passed the local rice depot. I know we must eat but I worry that we grow rice in a country with so little water when we could buy it from other countries where it doesn't need irrigation and perhaps export to them some of our technology to make them more prosperous and do something to redress the difference between the "haves" and the "have nots".

The road from Deniliquin to Hay passes through country which looks as though it supports nothing. The only signs of life we saw were several herds of cows grazing on the "long paddock" (the roadside) presumably because the long drought had made their home paddocks unable to support the cattle.

When we got to Hay, the sky was clear and we knew we the night would be pretty cold so we decided to seek the comfort of a caravan park. We chose the one in "The Book" which was supposed to be "budget" but they still charged us $20.

We'll have to return to warmer climes in haste.
